CHAPTER NINE
Melissa
Wednesday afternoon, I pulled Bubbles into my lap and tucked my feet under me on the couch as Rebecca shared stories about the memorial event for Stacey. âWhere did you get all this gossip?â
âRyan met a lady and her sister that Heather had stuffed behind a pillar at the event. Locals, and they knew a bit about everyone.â
âDid you catch their names?â
âI didnât meet them.â
The cameras were mostly set up in the family room, which Amanda and Sam were redecorating to show off perfectly. The large windows looked out over the ranch, and they were debating what to move to make the background of the scene perfect.
Rebecca reached out and placed a hand briefly on my knee to get my attention. âHow are you doing? Ryan told me that you wanted to clear your name.â
âYou know that I had nothing to do with Staceyâs murder, right?â I took it for granted that no one really believed Heather, but I wanted to hear everyone I knew say it.
âOf course. In fact, if thereâs anything we can do to help, either on film or not, please let me know.â
That was far more than I expected. âReally?â
âOf course, and I donât just mean the show, I mean me personally. Give me a call if you want to poke around. Oh, Maggieâs here.â She bounded off the couch and left the room, probably to get Maggie hooked up with a mic.
I didnât bother to get up to greet Maggie. I had figured out that it was awkward to repeat our greetings on camera after visiting for five minutes off camera. Instead I mulled over Rebeccaâs offer. What had she meant? Was there more that I could do to clear my name than saying on camera that I didnât do it?
Heatherâs main proof that I had killed Stacey was that I had been somewhere near the body when it was discovered. Maybe the blood on my clothing and hands wasnât a great sign, either. Did she really believe Iâd killed Stacey, or was she getting after me like she had when sheâd accused me of getting Stacey kicked off the show? If she really thought I was a murderer, then surely she would have quit the show.
âHey, Sis, good luck.â Sam ruffled my hair, then immediately smoothed it down before leaving with Amanda to get going on the never-ending pile of work for the resort.
Rebecca came back and got the cameras ready. âWeâre all set when you are, Melissa.â
âIâm ready.â I grabbed a toy to play with Bubbles.
The crew got into position, and only a small part of me even noticed. I had heard that reality casts forgot about the cameras after a while, but I hadnât believed it at the time.
âMel!â
I dropped the toy and got up to hug her. âMag! Iâm so glad you were able to come over. Sit.â
âHow are you? Are you okay? What happened?â She searched my face. âYou look pretty good, but you were pretty sick, right? Wow, you look really skinny.
